String Arrangement & Remote String Recording
In 2023, I was commissioned to create the string arrangement and recording production for “Fafirru Ilallah”, a song by Aleehya produced and composed by Ari Zenal.
When the project arrived, the core production had already been completed. The arrangement consisted of hip-hop and contemporary pop elements featuring piano, bass, programmed beats, and vocals. My role was to design a string section that could enhance the emotional impact of the song while blending naturally with the modern production.
One of the most interesting aspects of this project was its structure. The verses and choruses followed a familiar contemporary pop format, but the interlude introduced a rap section that dramatically changed the energy of the song.
From an arranging perspective, this became the most exciting challenge.
Rather than treating the strings as purely atmospheric support, I wanted them to actively contribute to the momentum of the track. During the rap section, I developed a more rhythmic approach by emphasizing the cello’s lower register with marcato articulation. This allowed the strings to maintain their orchestral character while preserving the energy and drive established by the rhythm section.
Recording Process
The string recording session took place at my apartment studio in Salemba, Jakarta.
The project featured a string quartet consisting of:
- Savira Maghfirlana – Violin I
- Yoan Kansil – Violin II
- Henny – Viola
- Fanny – Cello
To achieve a larger orchestral sound within a limited production schedule, the quartet performed identical arrangements twice. By layering multiple takes during production, we created a richer and wider texture that gave the impression of a much larger string ensemble while maintaining the intimacy and detail of a chamber group.
This approach allowed the production to achieve an orchestral character without requiring a full orchestra recording session.
Remote Delivery Workflow
After recording and editing were completed, all audio files were delivered digitally through Google Drive.
The production team then integrated the string recordings into the final mix and mastering process alongside the existing instrumental tracks and vocals.
